A/Prof Yuen is an award-winning expert ENT surgeon with almost 3 decades of clinical experience. He is widely recognised locally and internationally for his ENT expertise and experience, especially in the areas of hearing and ear surgery.
After completing his basic and advanced ENT specialist training in Singapore, he won the prestigious Ministry of Health’s Health Manpower Development Plan Award (HMDP) for a subspecialty Fellowship in Otology, Neurotology, Hearing Implants and Skull Base Surgery at the world-famous Sunnybrook Health Science Centre in Toronto Canada from 2007-2008. Subsequently he was awarded a further training award for a second Fellowship at the prestigious Ear Science Institute Australia (Perth) from 2008- 2009.
He is the former Director of Otology, Balance and Hearing Implant service in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology (ENT) -Head & Neck Surgery at the Changi General Hospital (CGH). Under his leadership the service provided the full range of high quality hearing rehabilitation services, including multidisciplinary teams to care for patients with hearing loss, dizziness, balance issues and hearing implants. The service also developed into the foremost cochlear implant centre especially for adult patients, with strong research and stellar clinical track record.
In the domain of cochlear implants, A/Prof Yuen has personally performed hundreds of such surgeries with very good outcomes. He is a very highly sought-after cochlear implant surgeon both locally and regionally, particularly in adult patients. He has supervised and mentored such surgeries for many current local implant surgeons, as well as surgeons from countries like Cambodia, Vietnam, and Indonesia.
He is also experienced in a wide array of specialised management for children and adults ear, sinus and nose, throat and voice, snoring and sleep disorders, as well as thyroid, head and neck conditions. He believes in delivering authentic and individualized care for each patient, fully respecting the patient’s dignity and unique circumstances.
A/Prof Yuen is very active in clinical research and has published close to 100 articles in peer-reviewed journals and sits on various editorial and review boards of prominent international journals, including Otology & Neurotology – the foremost journal on ear conditions. He was elected Fellow of the prestigious American Neurotology Society in 2009.
In 2010, he was awarded the Yahya Cohen Memorial Lectureship and Gold Medal for his research into inner ear conditions. This extraordinary honour is bestowed on members of the Academy of Medicine Singapore – a body that consists of specialists in Singapore – for outstanding research.
Since 2012, he has been on the Board of Directors for the Prosper Meniere Society that has its headquarters in USA, and dedicated to advancing research and care for patients with ear and balance conditions. A/Prof Yuen is a sought-after speaker and instructor locally and internationally. He has been invited to deliver many lectures to an international audience in Australia, USA, Canada, Thailand, Malaysia and Cambodia.
A/Prof Yuen is a strong advocate for evidence-based, and up-to-date techniques and modalities of surgery and medicine in delivering efficient, and cost-effective care for his patients. He held various leadership portfolios on surgical technology and innovation within the SingHealth Duke-NUS Academic Medical Centre. He is well versed in current and emerging technology and innovations that bring benefits to patient. He is the earliest surgeon in Singapore to perform many ear surgeries, and adopt approved surgical innovations and hearing implants, for example mastoid cavity obliteration, Vibrant Soundbridge middle ear implants, and bone-anchored hearing implants.
A/Prof Yuen has been bestowed with multiple service quality awards over the years. In 2021, he garnered the hospital-wide OneCGH Caring Award for exceptional compliments from his patient. He is awarded the 2023 COVID-19 Resilience Medal for his selfless work during the pandemic.
A/Prof Yuen is widely recognised for his teaching and education expertise, and has been awarded multiple teaching awards from the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine at the National University of Singapore (NUS) and the Duke-NUS Medical School. He held multiple teaching appointments within the hospital and cluster levels. In 2019, he was awarded the SingHealth GCEO Excellence Award as a Distinguished Educator – the highest honor bestowed on an educator. He sits on various examination committees and remains deeply involved in the teaching and training of new generations of ENT surgeons.
He is Visiting Consultant to Singapore General Hospital (SGH), Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH), Kandang Kerbau Women’s & Children’s Hospital (KKWCH), Sengkang Hospital (SKH) and Khoo Teck Puat Hospital (KTPH), where he shares his expertise and experience with his colleagues in ear and lateral skull base surgery e.g. for vestibular schwannoma, and jugular foramen tumors.
Following his illustrious career in public service, his passion and dedication to patients spurred A/Prof Yuen to set up his private practice, where he is fully committed to provide a compassionate and patient listening ear, empathize with the patient and to provide accurate and timely diagnoses, as well as evidence-based and effective care, in the best interest of his patients in an authentic and comforting environment.
